Vegetable Plants Direct is a small family run nursery run by myself (Keith) and my partner Sarah, I have over 10 years experience in horticulture starting with my own nursery in Sussex before going on to manage big nurseries in Buckinghamshire then Worcestershire before becoming production manager for Pentland Plants in Edinburgh after a small stint there myself and Sarah started our own nursery in Fife but could not get that successfully going due to being severely handicapped by having to Wholesale and not able to Retail due to the nursery being rented and 7 miles from where we lived which caused many problems and after 3 years we decided it was time to head south and we found this property with land to rent on the Cornwall / Devon border But unfortunately the lease was not renewed after the first 6 months so we had to find somewhere else and we are now sharing the a nursery where we have been borrowing polytunnel space since November . We set up Vegetable Plants Direct in July 2007 to specialise in mail order Vegetable plants and this is proving very successful Come the January of 2008 we will be full steam ahead producing a huge range of veg plants for you to buy to help us with the speed and growing of this number we are investing in the Ladbrooke soil blockers(see picture of the 3/4" Below) which will give us 3/4" and 2"soil blocks to grow some of our stock in these will be quicker for us to sow and plant, will take up much less space and from your point of view will give you plants that will travel better and will not suffer from transplant check after planting out therefore establishing faster and growing away quicker. This is because once the roots reach the outer wall of the block they stop and stick in suspended animation until the block is planted hence the reason why they grow away quickly once planted. This also means that with aid of attachments that make holes in the next block size up as the block is made the 3/4" can be transplanted to the 2" and if necessary again in to the 4" with no root damage whatsoever thus resulting in no growth check whilst potting on.
